Golfing
There are two golf courses in Whangamata, a 9-hole course at Williamson Park, and an 18-hole course, Titoki, on the way out of town towards Waihi. Both courses have clubs to hire.
Surfing
Whangamata is well known for its 'bar', at the harbour entrance, where many nationally renown surfers have begun their careers. There is also a beach break, and you can catch waves at the estuary end of the beach. Board hire is available from the surf shops, or the board makers in town.
Windsurfing
Whangamata offers excellent conditions for windsurfing, with steady coastal winds and sheltered harbour areas ideal for both learning and experienced riders. The estuary and nearby beach provide varied water conditions, making it a popular spot for water sports throughout the year.
Bush Walks
There are numerous bush walks available, from Wentworth Valley for a picnic and swim in the clear cool waters, to the Luck at Last Goldmine, where you can explore old mine workings – don't forget a torch.
Deep Sea Fishing / Diving
Whangamata is a great base for deep sea fishing and diving, with local charters offering trips out to productive offshore waters. Visitors can experience rich marine life, reef systems, and the chance to catch a variety of popular fish species in the surrounding Coromandel waters.
Tennis / Squash
Whangamata offers access to local tennis courts where visitors can enjoy a casual game or friendly match in a relaxed coastal setting. Nearby facilities also provide squash courts, making it easy to stay active during your stay regardless of the weather.

New Zealand's biggest celebration of 50's and 60's – Amazing car show and Rock & Roll Festival – held annually, usually in March.
Opoutere
Popular for swimming and surfing, this spectacular white sand, 5km beach is protected from development by an afforested reserve. Wharekawa Harbour is known for bush walking and bird watching.
Mountain Biking
The Whangamata Information Centre provides information and permits for bush walks, mountain bike trails and other activities in the Pine Forest located 3km north of town on State Highway 25.
Luck at Last Mine
A well sign posted track in the forest provides a scenic one hour walk to old gold mine ruins. An alternative track to Pritchard's Kauri in virgin bush is 4km further on the Forestry Rd.
Whangamata Craft Trail
The Whangamata Craft Trail showcases local artists and makers, offering a relaxed way to explore handmade ceramics, art, jewellery, and coastal-inspired creations. Visitors can browse studios and small galleries around town, discovering unique pieces that reflect the character of the Coromandel.
Onemana
Onemana is a nearby coastal village known for its peaceful beach and relaxed atmosphere, making it a great spot for a quiet escape from Whangamata. It is a popular surfcasting beach and also offers exceptional views from the southern hilltop overlooking the coastline.
Tuhua (Mayor) Island
Tuhua (Mayor) Island lies about 30 kilometres offshore and is renowned for its deep waters and excellent big game fishing opportunities. Visitors can reach the island via local charter boats, making it a memorable offshore adventure from Whangamata.
Whiritoa
Whiritoa is a beautiful but exposed surf beach south of Whangamata, often experiencing strong surf and rough conditions. At the northern end, a tidal lagoon forms a sheltered area that provides safe swimming, making it popular with families when ocean conditions are less suitable.
Wentworth Valley
Wentworth Valley offers scenic bush walks through native forest, following a stream to a beautiful waterfall at the end of the track. The main walk takes around 1.5 to 2 hours return, with shorter options available depending on how far you choose to explore.
